I am currently growing and evaluating more than 300 known fig varieties. Since I believe that there are plenty of excellent unknown fig varieties in California, I have acquired a collection of more than 80 unknown varieties in the last few years. So far, I have extracted the following excellent quality unknowns from my collection.
(TP-FG-0001) UCD-West-Student-Farm
(TP-FG-0002) UCD-Mini
(TP-FG-0003) Power-Line-Rd
(TP-FG-0004) Yolo-Bypass
(TP-FG-0005) Discovery-Park
(TP-FG-0006) Bannon-Creek-Park
At this time, it is not possible to determine if the above fig varieties are common or not. I expect to resolve this issue in the coming years. Note that all of the above trees may have exposure to the fig wasp but that does not mean that they need the fig wasp to produce figs.
You will receive a package of twelve cuttings (two cuttings from each of the above six unknown varieties).
Shipping is free and within the US only.
Comments about the varieties
(TP-FG-0001) UCD-West-Student-Farm
The mother tree is an unknown fig tree located in Davis, California. The figs from the tree are of superior quality that often tastes like sweet butter. It also stores well in the refrigerator (more than 10 days). The tree produces few breba figs and abundant main crop. The figs dry well on the tree. I have tasted more than 80 varieties in 2018; this fig is in the top five for me so far.
(TP-FG-0002) UCD-Mini
The mother fig tree was discovered in Davis in Summer 2017. The tree produces few breba figs that are of small size and superior quality. The tree also produces moderate main crop figs with small size, superior quality, ripen late, and dry well on the tree. I have tasted the breba of more than 27 varieties in 2018; the breba fig of the UCD-Mini is in the top three for me so far.
(TP-FG-0003) Power-Line-Rd
The mother tree is an unknown fig tree located in Sacramento near a conservation at the bank of the Sacramento River. This one-crop fig tree is consistently super productive. The figs are very sweet and of superior quality. They dry very well on the tree and they are the best for making fig jam or for making dried figs using a dehydrator. The inside of the fig is reddish dark similar to most black figs.
(TP-FG-0004) Yolo-Bypass
The mother tree was discovered near Sacramento in Summer 2017. The tree grows in the wild in an isolated area with no other fig trees nearby. The figs from the tree are of superior quality that tastes like sweet intense berry jam. It also stores well in the refrigerator (more than 10 days). I did not notice any breba figs on the tree and the main crop is produced in August and September. I have tasted more than 80 varieties in 2018; this Yolo Bypass fig is the best for me so far. Few friends suggested that the fig may be a variant of the Adriatic fig variety.
(TP-FG-0005) Discovery-Park
The mother tree was found in Sacramento in Summer 2014. The figs from the tree are unique (especially the inside of the fig) and they do not look like any known fig variety. The figs are of very large size (often more than 100 grams) and complex flavor which is not that sweet. According to my preliminary experiments, leaving the figs on the tree to improve their sweetness often leads to spoiling the figs. The fig tree is very fast growing and it produces both breba and main crop figs from June until November.
(TP-FG-0006) Bannon-Creek-Park
The three cuttings are from an unknown fig tree that I discovered in Sacramento in Summer 2017. The figs from the tree are small to medium size with very good quality. The figs also have unique shape with beautiful cracks in the skin. I did not notice any breba figs on the tree and hence it has only main crop figs during the Summer.
