Description

Some 25 years ago my next door neighbor in Roseville, CA had a brown turkey tree so covered with fig wasps like ants that he didn't harvest any because they had "bugs" in them. All I needed to do is provide places for the birds to roost after feasting on the figs and keep the areas moist. I got a lot of seedlings and most had no fruit exept one.  A small 3 foot tree covered with figs. They were so tasty that I couldn't stop eating them until they were all gone. Howard at the UC Davis USDA repository said that the probability of a really good fig happening this way is very remote. So I may have won the fig lottery with this one. There is no breba crop but once ripening begins at the end of July it never wants to quit. Fruit continually ripening two at a time on every branch until the fall weather shuts it down. Last season we harvested several boxes on the day before Thanksgiving. Fruit starts out large often over a hundred grams and tapers down later in the season. But fruit is always consistently sweet with a good wild cherry berry taste that mellows some as it get very ripe. As you can see by the pictures the fruit is generally firm enough to stand up to farmers market customers without having to resort to baskets or clam shells for selling. The left over fruit makes good dark colored jam as well. The tree has a good vigorous compact bush habit that needs little pruning. Fruit color is dark, with dark red pulp, and the flavor and yield is generally very good. Sweetness is consistent over a long season. I believe this variety would be particularly well suited for local marketing and more tropical climates. I am now selling 2 yr. potted trees so that fig growers and collectors in other areas (just not in California) can try this one out and compare it to the other figs varieties out there. I have purchased cuttings and plants of around a hundred other varieties, many on this site, for comparison planting them alongside the Hatfield Fig.  It is a common type. No wasp pollination needed. Auction is for a 2nd year tree in a 4 X 13.5 inch tall tree pot. Some already have fruit forming on the new growth. These trees are well established and ready for planting in the ground or large pot. They have roots coming out the bottom of the treepots. The first one pictured is sitting in a one gallon pot for comparison and is the plant I will send.  USPS priority 20.00. -No shipping to California addresses- please no exceptions. We do not want our own fig to be used against us at the local farmers markets! My wife loves to sell them at the markets especially since we have the best fig there! Make a offer if interested in multiple trees. These were originally intended to be planted in our own orchard but a lack of picking labor has changed our plans. Plus we need space for all the new trees we have bought. Thanks
