Description

Heavy Hitter Okra has the reputation of being the most productive variety of Okra, and was specifically bred for that purpose.

Heavy Hitter Okra is a relatively new variety on the market that has been reported to produce up to 250 pods per plant in a season and 44 young, tender pods in a single day. Dry Creek Farm owner, Ron Cook, has been developing this line of seeds since 1972 from Clemson Spineless Okra. Each season, he would select seeds from the plant that have the heaviest productivity and for multiple branching. After many years of improvement and selection, he ended up with the most productive okra plant that is very similar to Clemson Spineless in flavor and texture, but significantly more productive and often multi-branching. You can expect a very heavy crop of Okra. Clemson Spineless makes up 90% of all commercially sold, so imagine Clemson Spineless on 'steroids'—that's Heavy Hitter Okra.

Heavy Hitter is very productive and depending on how you grow it, may also be grown as either single stem or as a multiple branching plant. My Heavy Hitters plants are still producing and it is currently in the last week of October in Northern Georgia (Zone 7b). If you are new to growing Okra, these plants thrive in hot weather. i.e. when it hits above 100 degrees F. But they also require good watering/irrigation to reach their full yield potential. Okra yield depend heavily on getting these conditions met. They do not transplant well, so it is plant them directly in the garden/raise bed when late spring arrives. They do not like the cold/frost.

My batch of seeds were purchased from Baker's Creek when they first made seeds available in 2021 (The seeds go out of stock very quickly every time they restock this variety). This batch of seeds was grown in a dedicated raised bed and raised for seed production. Disclaimer: I have never had anywhere close to the 250 pods per plant, but this is certainly the most productive okra I have ever grown. Yield varies widely with Okra depending on how you grow them, but this variety is grown specifically for its heavy yield. Heavy Hitter takes longer than most when starting out, so expect them to be a bit slower than other varieties at the beginning, if you are growing this side by side with other varieties. However, once they start producing, they don't stop. This variety is best harvested around 4 inches, similar to Clemson Spineless in looks, texture and quality, but significantly more productive.

Baker Creek sells 15 seeds for $3.50 (Assuming it is not out of stock)

My price: 45 seeds for $3.50.
