NuMex Twilight Hot Peppers:
Annual. 70-90 days to maturity. Open-pollinated. Probably the most beautiful pepper in the world. The Numex Twilight Hot Pepper was developed at New Mexico State University and is a hybrid of the Thai ornamental pepper. Wonderful as an edible or eye-catching ornamental. The plant has green stems, green leaves, and white flowers. Produces beautiful 3/4" - 1" upright purple fruits, about 1/2" wide; about the same size as a typical Pequin. White(ish) fruits turn purple then ripen in a rainbow array to yellow, orange, then red, when mature. Produces straight through the summer months and all four colors appear on the plant at the same time. Very prolific and productive. Naturally compact and bush-like; grows to about 18" tall. Well-suited for containers or in-ground. Considered very-hot and similar to Cayenne and Tabasco peppers’ heat levels at 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville Heat Units. Excellent all-around use in the kitchen and great fresh for cooking, salads, drying, and grinding into hot-pepper flakes, and hot sauces.
Sow seeds indoors, 1/4" deep, in a warm location. 14-28 days to germinate. Transplant to fertile soil in containers or hedge 20" apart, at least 3' between rows, in areas with full sun in the spring.
We were introduced to Twilight by a pepper-head friend about 5 years ago and everyone loved them. In the second or third year of growing, we harvested our own seed, and results in the following year were less than impressive. Cross-pollination caused larger fruits, muted and less coloring, and large, leggy plants. We've been buying pure seed ever since. Most of our neighbors grow this now as it's easy and works as an ornamental in the landscape as well as the dinner table. Some have made a wonderful hot-sauce as well. We've frozen a large bag of pods and use it for cooking over the winter, too. It's a great variety to add to the garden.
