Rigato del Gargano is an Italian chimera fig, dating back through oral tradition to the ancient Gargano culture, and is illustrated by Bartolomeo Bimbi (1696). It is a very ancient and rare variety. It is a unifera, ripening it's crop in August. The fruit has a vividly striped yellow and green skin, noticeable already on the very small figlets and an intense red flesh. Rigato del Salento is similar but with a shorter petiole and lighter pulp color. Gargano has a long petiole and produces pyriform shaped, medium sized fruit of excellent quality. The variegation does not affect the leaves, but will be noticed on the apical bud and the terminal branches, as with other chimeras.
