Description

This is an auction for two (2) cuttings of Col de Dame Gris.  The cuttings are 6” - 8” long and taken from our mature, potted and healthy, Col de Dame Gris fig tree.  The cuttings will be wrapped in lightly dampened paper towels, sealed in a Ziploc bag and shipped to you via USPS First Class or Priority Mail.  No international shipping.  The cuttings in the picture are the cuttings that you will receive.

Col de Dame Gris produces one (1) crop of high quality, purple(ish)/grey (heather purple?) colored figs.  Breba (first crop) will develop then shrivel and drop off.  The second (main) crop produces small to medium sized piriform figs with a thin, firm skin that does not damage easily.  Easy to bite into.  Deep red colored pulp with a no cavity.  Pulp is dense and jammy with a pleasing texture and small seed crunch.  Rich flavor with strong berry undertones.  Medium amount of sweetness that is level with the flavor.  Small sized eye.  Insect resistant, resistance to souring and very rain tolerant.  Moderate vigor with average amount of growth every season.  Suited variety for potted culture; does not split.  Known to do well in-ground and winter protected in USDA Zone 6 and below.  No pollination required.

Our Col de Dame Gris was sourced from directly from the wonderful collection of Pierre Baud in France.  Col de Dame Gris gets high grades from us and definitely lives up to the hype.  We consider it one of the best tasting varieties in the orchard and definitely a top-10 fig.  Col de Dame Gris registers on all the marks;  It is insect and rain tolerant, disease resistant, high quality and excellent tasting and suited for potted culture.  The thick, jammy texture of the pulp is unique to a Col de Dame variety and Col de Dame Gris does not disappoint.  The pulp can easily be scooped with a butter knife and spread on a piece of toast.  We find Col de Dame Gris ripens later then most varieties here in NYC, USDA Zone 7b, and a variety we like to refer to as a 'fringe fig'.  Fringe fig was coined by a Long Island, NY fig farmer and refers to the late ripening nature of a variety, specific to the zone it's grown in.  So it definitely requires lots and lots of sun and a little longer season than most.  We will start to see ripe figs from Col de Dame Gris just toward the end of our season and a late season warm spell will definitely favor this variety.  We've harvested more than one ripe Col de Dame Gris in an early and warm December.  This is not the norm and shouldn't be expected.  A mature tree will ripen fruit a little earlier so patience is necessary but worth it.  We've observed the figs to ripen slowly, one at a time and they won't ‘come on’ all at once like some other varieties.  Overall it's a great variety for potted culture here in the northeast and worth adding to the collection.  Very cold hardy.  This variety requires a little more effort by the grower, but the quality fruit it produces is more than worth it.

☆  IMPORTANT - PLEASE KEEP READING  ☆

eBay is a great place for buying fig trees and cuttings but there are some unreputable sellers operating right now that want nothing more than to steal your money.  They see the fig hobby only as a money making opportunity and don’t care what is actually sold to you.  Some of these sellers have good feedback ratings that have been fabricated.  Many collectors have lost money to these criminals with little or no recourse from eBay.  Likewise, the same criminals will purchase from reputable sellers and make false claims of poor merchandise.  This is not a victimless crime as eBay has raised fees which have raised the prices of fig material for collectors.  Again, the hobbyists suffer with little to no recourse from eBay.  Have fun shopping and buying on eBay and elsewhere but please be aware and above all, protect yourself.  If a deal seems a little too good to be true, it probably is.  eBay is a free market for any merchant but please only buy from reputable sellers.  Please take the time to read this informative article I’ve written about Buying Fig Trees and Cuttings From the Internet.
