Description

This is a live and healthy Lloral (MP) fig tree in a 4x4 treepot.  Propagated by an extra cutting in 2017.  Our own Lloral (MP) fig tree is young and has not produced ripe figs for us yet.

Straight from Mallorca and the wonderful collection of Montserrat Pons, this is Lloral.  Lloral is one of the lesser known varieties from Pons, but recently gaining popularity due to reported early ripening.  Lloral produces main crop only, no pollination required.  Pons describes the fig as medium thickness green-skinned with longitudinal cracks, a little sweet, whitish-red pulp with a small cavity, vigorous, prolific, rain and insect resistant.

Here is a link to the Montserrat Pons website and a description of Lloral with pictures.

Please note:  The temperatures in NYC have dropped this week.  The days are getting shorter and dormancy is starting to trigger.  The pictures of the tree were taken on October 9th.  I expect the tree to start dropping leaves very soon.  So there is a possibility that you may receive a dormant tree with no leaves.  This is perfectly normal and there are several options.  If you live in a colder zone you can keep the tree asleep and let it wake naturally next season or you can keep the tree inside near a bright window and wake it up early.  If you live in a warmer climate I would suggest rotating the tree into your collection and let it wake naturally.

About nycfigs

I am a fig collector and hobbyist with approximately 60 different varieties in the collection.  My family and I enjoy propagating and raising figs in potted culture here in New York City with no help from a greenhouse.  Our goal is to find the many wonderful varieties of fig that grow well in our zone, 7b, NYC, with a minimal amount of fuss.  It is a wonderful activity that we are able to share together.  We enjoy the healthy benefits from the fruits of our labors and love to share our many varieties of delicious figs and trees with friends and neighbors.  I am a member of NAFEX, Backyard Fruit Growers and a regular contributor to the Ourfigs and former Figs4Fun forums under the moniker nycfig.  In 2016 I was honored with the title of Fig King at the Staten Island Fig Festival, New York State's only event encompassing all things fig.  I am also founder and owner of figBid.com, the internet's only open marketplace dedicated to all things fig.  If you are the slightest bit interested in learning about figs I highly recommend joining www.ourfigs.com.  There are also several active Facebook groups that you can check out.  Just type "Fig Tree" in the Facebook search bar.
