Description

This auction is for a live, healthy Malta Black Fig Tree growing in a 4x4 treepot.  This tree is one year old and was propagated by a cutting taken from our mature, healthy Malta Black fig tree.  The tree will be shipped to you via USPS Priority Mail.  The tree in the pictures is the tree that you will receive.  Great for potted culture or in-ground.

Malta Black produces 2 crops of dark purple, small to medium-sized figs.  Breba crop not as prolific as the main crop.  Main crop ripens early here in USDA Zone 7b (NYC) so you’ll be eating delicious figs by the middle of August and continues through the first week of September.  The dark purple skin is thin and easy to bite into.  When cut open there is almost no cavity in the bright red colored pulp.  Very meaty fig with a pleasing texture and small to no seed crunch.  Nice fig flavor with strong berry undertones.  Very sweet.  Small eye.  Great variety for potted culture or in-ground and is known to do well in Zone 7 with no protection and less sun than most other varieties.  Fast producing and very productive.  No pollination required.

This Malta Black was propagated by a cutting taken from a first generation Malta Black which came directly from the now closed Belleclare Nursery in Plainview, Long Island, NY.  Belleclare was in business for almost 50 years and was owned and operated by two of the most prominant fig people in the world, Chris and Bill DiPaola.  It was home to many wonderful and rare varieties of fig trees.  Malta Black is one of those rare trees.    It became a stock variety at the nursery and know as BC #35 on the original sales list.

Please note:  The temperatures in NYC have dropped this week.  The days are getting shorter and dormancy is starting to trigger.  The pictures of the tree were taken on October 9th.  I expect the tree to start dropping leaves very soon.  So there is a possibility that you may receive a dormant tree with no leaves.  This is perfectly normal and there are several options.  If you live in a colder zone you can keep the tree asleep and let it wake naturally next season or you can keep the tree inside near a bright window and wake it up early.  If you live in a warmer climate I would suggest rotating the tree into your collection and let it wake naturally.
