Description

I found this fig growing several years ago in the small town of Murray, KY. I was informed by the Lebanese family growing it that their grandfather had brought this fig with him from Bteghrine, Lebanon to the US, some time around the turn of the last century. They estimated that it had to be in the late 1800's to early 1900's that their grandfather immigrated to Cairo, IL and brought this fig with him. This fig has been growing in Cairo, IL for well over 100 years (neighbors of the family there are still growing it )! The family has spread this fig all over the US as each family member would take a start with them wherever they would move to around the country.

This fruit appears to be very similar to the variety "Brunswick". During hot dry, summers this fig can be so sweet and tasty. I've had perfectly ripe figs, during a drought summer, that were just outstanding. They are quite rich and sweet and can often have a distinct peachy flavor (to my taste buds anyway :-) . Tree can be quite productive once established.

Very cold hardy here in zone 6b. This tree has demonstrated little to no die back when exposed to temperatures that dipped briefly into single digits F (overnight).

Though the appearance of the leaves and fruit seem similar to Brunswick, as I learn more about the Brunswick varieties, I am becoming more convinced that this variety may have some distinct differences. Notably, better tasting fruit than Brunswick as well as greater tolerance to cold weather conditions. More evaluation is needed to test this out.

You will receive 2 cuttings about 8-9" in length.
