Description
Live Rooted Plant from cutting, Black Madeira Fig Tree, about 7 months old and comes in a 3.5X3.5X6in pot. All the pictures posted are from my garden and from the same mother tree, the last 5 pictures are the actual plant you will receive. A few weeks after  the plant arrives, or you see the roots, please pot it up with good draining organic potting soil and keep it in a location that is protected from direct sun and cold windy weather until it can start growing and get acclimatized. Over watering is the #1 cause of killing these young fig trees but you should keep the soil damp. Please give it a good drink when it arrives.
I use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. I've been growing Black Madeira Fig trees for 9 years here in San Diego, CA and acquired the cuttings from an agronomist in the Ocean Beach area of Point Loma. My Black Madeira didn't come from either KK or UCD. I heavily pruned one of my trees in February/March and it has already put on 27 new branches between 3 & 5 ft. long.  A few years ago I gave a small tree to my sister who lives in New Jersey and after one year in a pot, brought in for the winter, she planted it in the ground. She wraps and mulches it well for winter and it always dies back partially and some times all the way down to the ground and then grows back to 5 ft. giving a good crop of great figs.  In my opinion the best tasting Black Madeira figs are the the ones that get the most sun/heat while ripening. As the fig ripens it gets larger, blacker, softer and then a stiff sweet syrup starts to bulge out of the bottom,  Time to Pick! Make sure the soil doesn't dry out when you have fruit set because it causes the skin of the fig to split when you begin to water again. The fastest growing Black Madeira plants that I have get very little direct sunlight have very large dark leaves and are sitting on a big pile of moist compost although the fruit are very big the taste is less sweet and more watery than those from trees that get a lot of sunlight. Speaking of sunlight, if you get direct afternoon sun with a high temperature make sure to use shade cloth in order to avoid sunburn.
