Trifoliate Orange - Citrus trifoliata

Trifoliate orange is a very cold hardy citrus which is sometimes grown as a garden curiosity, but in fact the fruit (while inferior to more well known citrus varieties) are edible and worth using if you're in a place where you can't grow the less hardy types.

The small seedy fruits yield a tart juice which makes a respectable citrus-ade when mixed with water and sweetener. This species does have a reputation for bearing a strong undesirable flavor that's hard to water down, but that trait does not appear to be in all individuals of the species as the fruit from the parent tree (from which these seedlings came) did not have any off flavors when used as a beverage component. Additionally, the fragrant leaves can be added to foods while they cook to impart their flavor (like bay, you don't actually eat the leaf). The most similar flavor I can compare the leaves to is lemon grass.

Trifoliate orange has further use as a dwarfing rootstock for other citrus varieties, as well as being very useful in breeding work to hybridize with cold tender citrus for developing new hardy varieties which is an area of work that still has lots of room for exploration (many citrus varieties are able to hybridize with each other).

Trifoliate oranges can be evergreen, semi-evergreen or deciduous depending on the growing location.  These plants were grown outdoors in USDA climate zone 8a where they are typically semi-evergreen or deciduous with either partial or full leaf drop when dormant.

To keep shipping price low and to ensure maximum phytosanitary security, this plant will be shipped bare root with all soil removed and roots wrapped to keep them moist.
