Description

History: Black Manzanita is a California seedling variety found growing in the Bay Area. The mother tree was several decades old and recently has been under attack and possibly cut down by now. Originally discovered by Alastair B, I was given my cuttings directly from him and his mother tree. After receiving my cuttings late winter, they rooted within 20 days and within 7 months were fruiting and 6-7 feet tall. The tree that is up for auction was one of several vigorous airlayers removed from my mother tree (last 2 images). It is stunningly healthy and grown exclusively within organic Happy Frog professional growing mix.

Variety Information: Black Manzanita is a common type and does not need the fig wasp for pollination. Producing both a small breba crop with a heavier main crop starting to ripen in late august along the California coast and continuing into November. Fruit size varies between 50-70g, with a thick midnight blue/black skin, and a delicious blackberry dark purple/black jammy interior. To my palate, Black Manzanita is very balanced when it comes to flavor, with equal parts sweet, berry, and figgy notes. Lastly, Black Manzanita is without a doubt, the most aggressive/vigorous grower out of the 70+ varieties I have and seems to thrive in both humid and dry climates. In my experience, it is not water sensitive and from Alastair's stories, the original mother tree was found growing near saltwater. This variety is bulletproof!

About Me: You can find my posts on Ourfigs under the username Achilles. I come from a long line of fruit farmers growing sub-tropical varieties both here in California and on the island of Corfu, Greece. Currently, I am specializing in fig and avocado varieties. I am always willing to chat figs and if you have questions about this listing, please DM me and I will reply back as soon as I can.

Sale/Shipping/Care Information: All sales are final. All of my figs should be assumed to have been exposed in some way to FMV Fig Mosaic Virus.  Young figs often show more severe symptoms of FMV, but almost always outgrow symptoms when proper care and fertilization is applied. You will receive the tree that is shown within the first 3 images. It is in a 4x9" tree-pot, along with organic Happy Frog professional growing mix. I only use organic growing mixes and fertilizers on all my trees without exception. Upon receiving this tree, you can either decide to winter it as is or up-pot it into a 5gal container - regardless of what you decide, it has a mature and healthy root ball. Currently, the tree is exposed to direct sunlight and humidity within the 50-60% range but climatizing it to your microclimate before transplanting is always suggested. Buyer is responsible for knowing their own state's import laws and takes full responsibility if the shipment is postponed, stopped, or confiscated.

Images: I have been granted permission by Alastair B to use his fruit images.
