Description
Black Madeira Fig Tree in a 2gal from Air Layering ready to up-pot or plant in the ground. The leaf spread is 27X11 in. wide and top of soil to top of leaf is 24 in.   The first 3 pictures are the actual tree that you get. All the pictures posted are from our garden. The shovel in the last photo indicates the size increase in just 20 months from last pruning.  We use no chemical fertilizers or pesticides but lots of compost and some organic fertilizer. I've been growing Black Madeira Fig trees for 10+ years in San Diego, CA and acquired the cuttings from an agronomist in the Ocean Beach area of Point Loma.  A few years ago I gave a small tree to my sister who lives in New Jersey and after one year in a pot, brought in for the winter, she planted it in the ground. She wraps and mulches it well for winter and it always dies back partially and some times all the way down to the ground and then grows back to 5+ ft.  In my opinion the best tasting Black Madeira figs are the the ones that get the most sun/heat while ripening. As the fig ripens it gets larger, blacker, softer and then a stiff sweet syrup starts to bulge out of the bottom,  Time to Pick! Make sure the soil doesn't dry out when you have fruit set because it causes the skin of the fig to split when you begin to water again. The fastest growing Black Madeira plants that I have get little direct sunlight have very large dark leaves and are sitting on a big pile of moist compost although the fruit are very big the taste is less sweet and more watery than those from trees that get a lot of sunlight. Speaking of sunlight, if you get direct afternoon sun with a very high temperature make sure to use shade cloth in order to avoid sunburn.
