Some of you may remember this fig and photos of it when it was first introduced on the Figs4Fun Forum. Its origins are unknown but is still quite an interesting fig. This fig is known to get very large with very nearly black skin. One of the main interest points for this fig is the large size (even bigger than the fruits I got this year) :~). The photos I took this season don't do it real justice.
This past summer was an odd season for us with the "off" rains we got. The conditions caused nearly all of my "black" figs to be very washed out in color. Most were nowhere near as dark as they normally should be. In spite of this, Martin's Black did come out fairly dark when compared to some of my other figs.
This fig is known to have a large eye and large interior cavity (as can be seen in the photos). Flavor is fair to good depending on conditions. Hot, dry, conditions produce tastier, sweeter fruit. Excessive rains can cause spoilage on the tree. Controlled conditions of a greenhouse or pot culture would likely produce better fruits as well.
This variety produced ripe fruit surprisingly well for me here in zone 6b.
The green fruits pictured are some of many unripe fruits that were still on the tree as the season was coming to an end.
In this sale you will receive 3 healthy cuttings about 8 to 9" in length.
