This fig was found growing near the small town of Murray, KY in 2010. I learned from the Lebanese family who owned the tree that their grandfather had brought this fig with him when he immigrated to Cairo, IL from Bteghrine, Lebanon more than 100 years ago (sometime around 1900).
This fig has been growing in Cairo ever since. The family continues to spread this fig around the country as various family members move to new locations and take this treasured heirloom with them.
The fruit appears to be similar to the fig variety known as "Brunswick". It does sometimes have issues with splitting and spoiling in excessively rainy conditions. It doesn't have a huge eye but can still be open sometimes allowing small bugs to get inside.
On the other hand, during hot dry summers here in KY, this fig can be quite tasty. During our occasional drought summers, I have had figs from this tree that were just outstanding! They are quite rich and sweet and can often have a distinct peachy flavor.
Productive tree. Ripens main crop quite well in zone 6b.
This is a wonderful heirloom fig variety that I have the privilege of sharing with all of you.
If there is ever a problem with the plant material I send you, I will always do my genuine best to make it right.
