Description

This listing is for 10 seeds of Quetzali Watermelon.  100% organic, non-genetically modified seed.  These are our extra FEDCO seeds from this season.  We buy in small bulk lots, use what's needed for family, friends, and small co-ops, then sell the remainder at a substantial discount for other growers.  All seed lots have been tested for viability.  This variety has been trialed from several sources to ensure the selection of the best strain.  100% success in the northeast.  All extra seeds are professionally packaged and labeled.  Free USPS First Class shipping to the lower 48.

From FEDCO:

Citrullus lanatus  (85 days) Open-pollinated. Sweet (tested 9.7% sugars at WSU trials) with some substance. Ripens 9–12 lb fruits with dark green skin splotched with lime-green sponge prints. Even more attractive on the inside where the dense pink flesh is almost seedless! Caution: Requires a sharp knife, strong wrist, and sure stroke to cut open its skin.

Our space for vegetables on the farm is limited because of the damage by deer.  They're relentless!  Everything must be fenced in and we try to fit as much variety as we can.  One of these seasons we'll expand the fence, but it won't be this season.  So we have to be prudent when it comes to the size of melons.  One of our neighbors is growing the extra-large La Bestia this season but it looks like they'll take up a ton of space.  Really nice melons, though!  We settled on a few smaller varieties instead; Diana (super sweet!) and Sugar Baby.  Both of them did great for us this past season.  This season FEDCO recommended Quetzali to us.  Quetzali is not an extra-large melon and looks just big enough to add to the same bed with Diana and Sugar Baby.  But Quetzali looks to be almost seedless and it's up there on the Brix scale.  Who doesn't like a really sweet melon??  The trade-off is a thick skin and by all accounts, this one needs a heavier, sharp blade.  We don't have a problem with splitting melons but if you do, Quetzali will fit the bill.  It doesn't have a terribly long season, either.   All-in-all, with limited space aside, we're looking forward to squeezing this one in.  The picture of melons is not ours but used with permission.  We'll replace them with our own pics at the end of the season.

Harvesting watermelon at proper ripeness is an art. Thumping should produce a low, hollow sound. Spread thumb and forefinger and press hard on fruit. If you feel any give, the watermelon is ripe.  Also, unripe fruit is heavy; a ripe one is lighter.  Don’t heed the traditional advice to wait for the closest tendril to brown—that may be too late. Minimum germination temperature 60°, optimal range 75–95°.

Shipping and Combined Shipping

NYCfigs ships on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

We never 'pass the savings' of expensive shipping charges to the customer and always ship as economically as possible.  Sometimes this becomes a juggling act between cost-of-goods vs. cost-of-container vs. shipment size vs. shipping cost vs. margins.  With combined shipping, it's all in the packing and we'll always find the most inexpensive shipping method available.  But there are times when it's impossible to ship economically and we'll always let you know before paying.  The shipping for all items sold by NYCfigs will combine automatically with all other items purchased from NYCfigs.  Items that ship free can't be discounted.  In the rare instance of excess shipping charges, NYCfigs will refund after the invoice is paid.  This ensures your items are received in a timely manner.
