We wanted to add a splash of color to the farm this season.  You can't help but smile when you see a sunflower so we decided on those.  And we never knew how many different varieties exist; there will be a lot of smiles  🙂  Our supplier said sunflowers were the first to sell out last season so we placed an early order and bought a bit of many different varieties.  We still weren't quick enough and lost out on one or two.  But we'll be trying at least a half-dozen or more varieties on the farm and friends and neighbors will trial the rest.  We're adding two edible-seed varieties and the remainder will be for cut flowers.  The deer really do a number by us so the sunflowers will have to be behind the fence with the raised beds.  I'll update this listing with pics as they grow.  Pics in the listing are from our supplier and used with permission.  Good luck!

Helianthus annuus F1. Tidy, semi-dwarf sunflower plants that are fast-growing and great for cut flowers. The first flower appears only 60 days from planting. These little plants only grow to 28" tall, with amazing geometrical flower centers that demonstrate "Fermat's Spiral."  That is the pattern that reveals the most compact method of packing items into a small area. Zebulon Sunflower Seeds produce sunny flowers that are a uniform 6" in diameter.  Zebulon sunflower seeds are a hybrid bred in Europe for the florist industry. Each strong stem bears a single, uniform flower that works beautifully as cut flowers in the summer.  (This was one of the more expensive varieties but we felt it was worth it.)

Sunflowers will grow in just about any well-drained soil, and they are drought tolerant. To grow sunflowers from seed, to grow really big plants with really big flowers, enrich the soil with organic matter and incorporate 2 cups of complete organic fertilizer per 10′ of row, and irrigate regularly.  When the plants are 12" tall, dissolve 1 tsp of borax (for boron) in 12 fl oz of water and spread the solution over 15′ of row.  Be careful not to over-apply this solution. This application of boron will produce big seeds and flower heads. Do not apply boron to other garden plants.  Produces annual flowers that can grow to incredible heights in just one season.
