This is a great story for a great fig.During the spring of 2017.I received a request from my dear friend Pamela Silvestri. She is the local food writer for the Staten Island Advance our local paper. She is also the person who along with myself started the Staten Island Fig Festival some 8 years ago.A dear friend of hers asked her to contact me.The reason being. To try to propagate cuttings of her family heirloom fig tree. Her friend was selling her grandmothers house that she grew up in.Luisa was her grandmother who planted the mother tree in the 1930s.This is a jet black fig with a red center with a powerful berry flavor extremely jammy too.You will see a photo of Luisa her daughter Rosa who is 97 years old now and Luisa’s granddaughter Donna.I was honored to take this challenge on in April 2017 just as the almost 90 year old tree was waking up.Not easy propagating at that stage. Also racing a developer.Who would most likely bull doze it away like a piece of trash.I did race back in mid May to get more cuttings seeing the first were struggling bad.I asked the developers if I could enter the property. He allowed me in thank goodness. They were the cuttings that took.I have been asked several times by people who contacted Pamela at the Advance. To ask me save a family heirloom tree. This was a spectacular find. With a beautiful ending. This opportunity was by far the most rewarding of them. You will see myself with Luisa’s 97 year old daughter Rosa and her granddaughter Donna with the successful rootings.Your cuttings will be cut off my tree in my garage upon payment.Your cuttings will ship first class mail unless priority is requested.
Their is so much more to this story. Not enough time to tell it.You will also see the house and the almost 90 year old tree. This tree is 5 generations old!!!
