Description

I am currently growing and evaluating more than 400 known fig varieties.  Since I believe that there are plenty of excellent unknown fig varieties in California, I have acquired a collection of more than 100 unknown varieties in the last few years. So far, I have extracted the following excellent quality unknowns from my collection.

(TP-FG-0001) UCD-West-Student-Farm

(TP-FG-0002) UCD-Mini

(TP-FG-0003) Power-Line-Rd

(TP-FG-0004) Yolo-Bypass

(TP-FG-0005) Discovery-Park

(TP-FG-0006) Bannon-Creek-Park

(TP-FG-0007) Sacramento-Airport

(TP-FG-0008) Twin-Cities-Rd

(TP-FG-0009) Guttridge-Park

(TP-FG-0010) El-Centro-Rd

(TP-FG-0011) Davis-Wildhorse

(TP-FG-0012) US-Route-50

(TP-FG-0013) El-Camino-Ave

(TP-FG-0014) Azevedo-Trail

Currently, it is not possible to determine if the above fig varieties are common or not. I expect to resolve this issue in the coming years. Note that all of the above trees may have exposure to the fig wasp but that does not mean that they need the fig wasp to produce figs.

You will receive a package of 14 cuttings (two cuttings from seven varieties to be selected from the above list). Please email me your choices after ordering.

Shipping is free and within the US only. The package will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail in a medium flat-rate box ($15 value).

Comments about the varieties (Check my other FigBid listings for pictures)

(TP-FG-0001) UCD-West-Student-Farm

The mother tree is an unknown fig tree located in Davis, California. The origin of this variety is Armenia. The figs from the tree are of superior quality that often tastes like sweet butter with no acidity or berry taste. It also stores well in the refrigerator (more than 10 days). The tree produces few breba figs and abundant main crop. The figs dry very well on the tree.

(TP-FG-0002) UCD-Mini

The mother fig tree was discovered in Davis in Summer 2017. The tree produces few breba figs that are of small size and superior quality. The tree also produces moderate main crop figs with small to medium size, superior quality, and dry well on the tree.

(TP-FG-0003) Power-Line-Rd

The mother tree is an unknown fig tree located in Sacramento near a conservation at the bank of the Sacramento River. This one-crop fig tree is consistently super productive. The figs are very sweet and of superior quality. They dry very well on the tree and they are the best for making fig jam or for making dried figs using a dehydrator.

(TP-FG-0004) Yolo-Bypass

The mother tree was discovered near Sacramento in Summer 2017. The tree grows in the wild in an isolated area with no other fig trees nearby. The figs from the tree are of superior quality that tastes like sweet intense berry jam. It also stores well in the refrigerator (more than 10 days). Furthermore, the figs ripen on the counter if they are picked before ideal ripeness. I did not notice any breba figs on the tree and the main crop is produced in August and September. I have tasted more than 300 varieties so far and this Yolo-Bypass fig is in the top 5 for me.

(TP-FG-0005) Discovery-Park

The mother tree was found in Sacramento in Summer 2014. The figs from the tree are unique (especially the inside of the fig) and they do not look like any known fig variety. The figs are of very large size (often more than 100 grams) and complex flavor which is not that sweet. According to my preliminary experiments, leaving the figs on the tree to improve their sweetness often leads to spoiling the figs. The fig tree is very fast growing and it produces both breba and main crop figs from June until November.

(TP-FG-0006) Bannon-Creek-Park

The mother tree was discovered in Sacramento in Summer 2017. The figs from the tree are small to medium size with very good quality. The figs also have unique shape with beautiful cracks in the skin. I did not notice any breba figs on the tree and hence it has only main crop figs during the Summer.

(TP-FG-0007 FIG) Sacramento-Airport

The three cuttings are from an unknown fig tree that I discovered in Sacramento in Summer 2017. The tree is very productive and the figs from the tree are medium size, very sweet, honey-gel-type, dry well on the tree, and of excellent quality. I did not notice any breba figs on the tree and hence it has only main crop figs during the Summer.

(TP-FG-0008 FIG) Twin-Cities-Rd

This is an unknown fig tree that I discovered near Sacramento in Summer 2019. The tree is very productive and the figs from the tree are medium to large size, very sweet, honey-gel-type, and of excellent quality. I did notice few breba figs on the tree that did not develop. Hence, I assume that the tree has only main crop figs during the Summer. A special characteristic of the leaves of this tree is that they are very tough, and this implies that the tree can tolerate heat very well. Another characteristic of this tree is its superior ability to dry the figs on the tree.

(TP-FG-0009) Guttridge-Park

This is an unknown fig tree that I discovered near Sacramento in Summer 2019. The tree is very productive and the figs from the tree are of medium size, sweet, intense berry-type, dry well on the tree, and of excellent quality. The tree produces few breba figs that are also of good quality.

(TP-FG-0010) El-Centro-Rd

This is an unknown fig tree that I discovered in Sacramento near a demolished house. So, this tree was planted by people and it is likely to be identified later. The figs from the tree are of superior quality. This fig is in the top 10 for me. I did notice few breba figs on the tree and the main crop is produced in August and September.

(TP-FG-0011) Davis-Wildhorse

The mother fig tree is located in Davis, California. The figs from the tree are of superior quality that are chewy and very sweet. Moreover, they can be dried on the tree with no spoilage. I did not notice any breba figs on the tree and the main crop is produced in August and September. I have tasted more than 100 sugar/honey-type varieties in 2019; this fig is the best one for me so far.

(TP-FG-0012) US-Route-50

The mother tree is an unknown fig tree that I discovered near Sacramento in June 2020. The tree is very productive and the breba figs from the tree are of large size, sweet, berry type, dry well on the tree, and of excellent quality. In my opinion, the breba of this variety belongs to the class of best tasting brebas. The main crop of the tree is like the breba and it is also of excellent quality.

(TP-FG-0013) El-Camino-Ave

The mother tree is an unknown fig tree that I discovered near Sacramento in Summer 2017. The tree is very productive and the main crop figs are long black, large size, sweet, berry type, dry well on the tree, and of excellent quality. In my opinion, this is one of the best black figs available. This variety is somehow like TP-FG-0003 but this variety produces figs that are larger, more beautiful, and better taste. The tree did not produce any breba figs so far.

(TP-FG-0014) Azevedo-Trail

The mother tree is an unknown fig tree that I discovered near Sacramento in Summer 2017. The tree is very productive and the main crop figs are black, medium size, sweet, berry type, and of excellent quality. In my opinion, the inside of the fig is unique. The tree did not produce any breba figs so far.
