Description

This is 60 cuttings of Toni-Anne's Calabrese Green, a local heirloom fig tree from Calabria, Italy.  This unknown fig tree was prematurely hard-pruned by a family member of the owner.  All of the cuttings are fresh, juicy and ready to root.  Some are semi-lignified (See example in the picture above).  No soft green wood or tip cuttings.  The cuttings are trimmed to a 45-degree angle on the top and straight on the bottom.  They are wrapped in a damp paper towel and sealed in a large Ziploc baggie.  You will receive a mix of various calipers from thin (chopstick), regular (pencil), fat (Sharpie), and extra-large (cigar).  8" - 10" in length with at least 3 nodes per cutting.  The cuttings will be shipped to you via USPS Priority Mail.

The mother tree comes from Calabria, Italy.  Brought over from the old country 35 years ago by a cousin of Toni-Anne's late husband.  Grows in-ground, unprotected in NYC, USDA Zone 7b.  2 crops.  The first crop is sparse.  The second crop is very prolific.  Produces hundreds of medium to large green figs with strawberry-red pulp from mid-September through the first week of October.  Common variety with no pollination required.  No splitting in-ground; has not been trialed in pots.

nycfigs observations:  The mother tree is not planted in an ideal spot and the owner is not happy with the way it is growing.  The tree does not receive enough direct sunlight during the growing season so it's a little leggy.  But she still manages to put on a healthy main crop.  With proper placement, this variety would probably produce a generous breba crop as well.  The owner pointed out two locations that her late husband had planted trees for neighbors and both are huge.  I observed bushy growth with large caliper trunks on both.  Did not observe FMV on the mother tree or the sister trees.  All of them have beautiful extra-large leaves on the lower portions of the trunks.  See the pictures above.  I cut open and took a picture of one unripe fig just to support the description.  The owner says that the tree has never been winter protected.  In my experience, this is one of those unknown local cold-hardy varieties that just grows like a weed.  Toni-Anne's Calabrese Green would make a wonderful addition to any northeast collection.

About nycfigs

I am a fig collector and hobbyist with approximately 60 different varieties in the collection.  My family and I enjoy propagating and raising figs in potted culture here in New York City with no help from a greenhouse.  Our goal is to find the many wonderful varieties of fig that grow well in our zone, 7b, NYC, with a minimal amount of fuss.  It is a wonderful activity that we are able to share together.  We enjoy the healthy benefits from the fruits of our labors and love to share our many varieties of delicious figs and trees with friends and neighbors.  I am a member of NAFEX, Backyard Fruit Growers and a regular contributor to the Ourfigs and former Figs4Fun forums under the moniker nycfig.  In 2016 I was honored with the title of Fig King at the Staten Island Fig Festival, New York State's only event encompassing all things fig.  I am also founder and owner of figBid.com, the internet's only open marketplace dedicated to all things fig.  If you are the slightest bit interested in learning about figs I highly recommend joining www.ourfigs.com.  There are also several active Facebook groups that you can check out.  Just type "Fig Tree" in the Facebook search bar.
